For millions of visually impaired individuals, navigating the world presents daily challenges. Simple tasks like reading a menu, identifying an object, or understanding a new environment can be significant hurdles. The goal was to create a mobile application that could serve as a reliable pair of eyes and a helpful assistant, functioning seamlessly both with and without an internet connection.
This technical challenge was compounded by a difficult development environment, including navigating restrictive corporate firewalls and working with unstable cloud-based IDEs. The project demanded not only technical excellence but extreme resilience and creative problem-solving to ensure delivery.
The Solution: An Intelligent AI Companion
I architected and built MySightGuide, a native Android application that integrates three powerful AI modalities into one intuitive interface:
Real-Time Vision
Using the device's camera and MediaPipe, the app identifies objects and describes the user's surroundings in real-time, providing crucial environmental context.
Instant Text Recognition
Powered by Google's ML Kit, the app instantly reads and speaks any text the camera points at, from documents to street signs, functioning entirely offline.
Conversational Assistant
Integrating the Gemini API, users can ask questions about what they're seeing, get summaries, and have a natural conversation with their AI guide.
